Cell Phone Tetrad

Great tetrad. I enjoyed reading it and I agree that it is reversing "independence" and fertilizer collaboration. That was an excellent social implication.

Although, I think your Obsoletes box is more of technology implications rather than social. The other 3 boxes were very strongly social. What would you add to Obsoletes in terms of social implications?

  2. Koh,

Some of the social implications for the obsolete box may include how we think of communication itself being a time-consuming effort that is strictly centralized or anchored to specific areas. The land-line, including line based telephones and the telegraph (which is no longer in use in this country) is definitely a static form of communication and ham radios are not very portable. Further, the two-way radios of earlier times were dependant on someone transmitting and someone receiving at the same time. These expectations have shifted substantially.

  3. Yes, I agree. The shift from a static to a dynamic form of communication has definately came about. These dynamic uses are now in many forms, other than just voice, with the invent of the smart phones, too. Video, photo, SMS texting, email, etc., are all included in the dynamic structure of the cell phone communication now.

  5. John, I liked how you provided such a comprehensive list of technologies that the cell phone obsoleted. I agree with the rekindling of community connectedness. I think smart phones rekindle this even more. Regarding your point that cell phones have led to people growing apart, do you think that other collaborative technologies like Internet-based group learning spaces and social networking applications might compensate for this isolating effect?

  6. Although I posted my tetrad to the blog, I forgot to post my comments on each section. I have supplied them in this comment. Please let me know what you think.

Enhances: This technology not only encreases the ease and frequency with which we communicate, it combines technologies that have, for the most part, previously been separate (such as the phone, the computer, and the music player) into one device. I feel that with enough time and use, the collaborative use of these technologies could actually reverse the trend of isolation from social groupings (less f2f).

Obsoletes: The cell phone of today could potentially obsolete fixed land-line phones and other , more tarditional forms of communication presently used by our society.

Retrieves/rekindles: This technology allows one to be more connected to a larger community on a more constant/consistent basis. Although the immediate result of fewer f2f encounters is obvious, a new type of connectivity is being developed.

Reverses: Replacements for this technology are already in the works. Communications devices that are more capable than what we have now and fit into a pair of glasses or a hearing-aid type case are now being developed. Computers and communications devices that are worn as clothing are not too far away from production. Communication jewelry is another area that is in development. As with so many other things, the limit of development for this industry is the human imagination.
